What should you be looking for?

The following outlines some factors to consider as you look for a good lure for Striped Bass.

  1. Type
  2. Size and strength
  3. Color

Type

Striped bass are known to be opportunistic feeders. For this reason, they will respond to a wide variety of lures, so the best strategy is to consider lures that resemble live bait that is found where you fish.

From my experience, topwater, popper, soft plastic, jig, crankbait, and spoon lures are all effective here. However, if you intend to fish primarily in saltwater, I strongly advise that you consider highly durable lures whereas other options are ideal for fishing in a mix of salt and fresh water to account for the fact that these stripers also swim in brackish water.

Size and strength

Striped bass can be some of the largest and most impressive fish to catch coming in at weights exceeding 40 pounds. As a result, you will need a larger lure, ranging in size from 6.5 to 10 inches, depending on the type of lure. Striped bass also strike hard, so buy lures with a strong hook that withstands an aggressive and forceful bite.

Color

The color of your lures could significantly affect your chance of catching prized striped bass. Because most baitfish have white bellies, white is a successful color. It is a good option that can be used in various situations.   However funnily enough, darker colors also work well at night when Stripers are most active.

Yellow and chartreuse are effective fish-catching colors because they stand out for Striped Bass as well.  Pink, wine red, and lures with patterns of red, blue, and yellow dots (inspired by Largemouth Bass fishing) have also produced trophy-worthy results for enormous fish swimming in deeper waters.

My three recommendations broken down

So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. Rapala Saltwater Skitter Walk 11 Fishing lure

My first lure for striped bass has excellent construction that is bright-colored to get the attention of your target fish easily. The eyes of this bait perfectly imitate the Striped Bass’ prey as well. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Rapala
  • Type; Topwater lure
  • Length: 4.4 inches
  • Weight: 0.01 pounds

Other inclusions:

  • Weighted tail
  • Realistic eyes
  • Sharp VMC hooks

Why have I chosen it?

Stripers are drawn to this lure because of its chrome color and realistic eyes. The product’s weighted tail keeps the bait in a natural position whenever it is at rest and large internal rattles produce a rhythmic side-to-side motion-and-sound combination that mimics wounded or fleeing baitfish.  This is a great option for dragging past structure in both day and nighttime hours.

2. Super Strike Little Neck Popper

This next lure is a popular choice among many anglers because of its effectiveness against Stripers as well as a good assortment of other saltwater species. It is a topwater lure that jumps across the surface to attract fish with sturdy construction that is easily cast making it an excellent choice for both experienced and beginners. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Super Strike
  • Type; Topwater popper
  • Length: 6 inches
  • Weight: 1 to 1 ¾ ounces

Other inclusions:

  • Sturdy treble hooks
  • Ease of casting

Why have I chosen it?

This lure flies and floats due to its slender shape and weight. The product’s design allows for versatility in profile matching and handling wind and water conditions and is well known for its easy casting and ability to withstand toothy predators.  This is a great option if you are trolling for them as they move around in the currents.

3. Gibbs Lures Danny Surface Swimmer

The final recommended lure comes in various sizes which due to its effectiveness is regarded as one of the most widely recognized metal-lipped swimmers today.  See its specifications below:

  • Length: 4.5, 6, and 7.5 inches
  • Weight: 3.5 ounces
