What are underwater metal detectors?

Underwater metal detectors are specialized instruments that can detect metallic objects submerged in bodies of water or even those that the sand has covered along seashores. In essence they are exactly the same as metal detectors that are used on land, except they are a shaped differently and water proof.

When used in the water though, you should be aware that you do need to be down near the bottom for it to work meaning you will be swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving when looking for treasure.  They may also be useful for your magnet fishing needs as well.

What should you be looking for?

The following factors should be considered as you hunt around for a good underwater metal detector for your fossicking adventures.

  1. Construction material
  2. Type
  3. Waterproof rating
  4. Search coil
  5. Audio support
  6. Additions

Construction material

As you shop for underwater metal detectors, you will probably come across products made from PVC or stainless steel. These materials are suitable for underwater metal detectors since PVC and stainless steel can withstand corrosion brought by submerging in the deepest waters.

However, stainless steel is more durable than PVC, making the former a better choice. Whatever construction material you prefer for your underwater metal detector however, just be sure that the instrument is appropriately sealed and has quality assurance markings to ensure it is effective underwater.

Type

Underwater metal detectors rely on two types of technology being pulse induction detection and very low frequency detection. These are outlined as follows:

  1. Pulse induction detection  – Pulse induction metal detectors use a single coil as both the transmitter and receiver, making it easier to search in regions with high-ground mineralization. It emits electrical pulses into the earth, creating an electromagnetic field. They are extremely sensitive and will overlook minerals and salt in the water. Furthermore, the electromagnetic pulse penetrates deeper into the earth, boosting the likelihood of discovery.
  2. Very low frequency detection – These instruments generate a steady magnetic field that is generated by one coil and pushed into the earth by another. A secondary coil catches up with the magnetic field once it bounces back.  When utilized in harsh conditions, most VLF devices nowadays are adjustable allowing you to fine-tune them to function in your surroundings.

Waterproof rating

As previously stated, depth and water protection are critical regarding underwater metal detecting mainly as the strain of deeper waters can effect waterproofing measures.  To be sure, examine their IP ratings to determine how waterproof they are.  In general terms, the deeper a metal detector can penetrate, the higher the IP rating the are.

Some will also record a depth rating on their products as well – this will also guide you to waterproofing capabilities too.

Search coil

When selecting the best metal detector, you must strike a balance between mobility and coverage. A broader search coil will allow you to scan broad regions fast. However, you will have to cope with the inconvenience of carrying a large gadget when underwater. On the other hand, metal detectors with small-size coils have a restricted scope and may cause you to overlook a metallic item.

Audio support

Most detectors emit an auditory signal to notify you of the presence of metal nearby whereas others will simply just pulse. The most basic audio support is a simple beeping sound and although useful, it does not convey nearly as much information as a ground-balanced audio system.

These devices generate high-pitched noise, which is proportional to the intensity of the electromagnetic field. Thus, a louder or higher-pitched tone indicates that the item is close.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. Wrist strap: This item is useful for keeping the instrument within your reach and from slipping from your hands.
  2. Control interface: This refers to a metal detector that offers adjustable user settings to fine-tune the equipment better.
  3. Battery:  Most use a replaceable battery whilst others offer rechargeable options.
  4. Warranty: Products with warranty offer buyers confidence that their items are new and in working condition.

FAQ

Can underwater metal detectors be used on land?

Absolutely, in fact many use them on the beach and lake’s edge as well as in the water. Whilst smaller varieties do not have the range of land based detectors, they will definitely work just as well.

Do underwater metal detectors work?

Yes they do! As long as it is waterproof and you are not using it at depths outside their range, they will detect metal very well.

My three recommendations broken down

So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. PudiBe Pinpoint Metal Detector

This handheld underwater metal detector is a pinpointer type making it very straightforward to use. It can be used both above and below the water for simple identification of buried objects. See its specifications below:

Why have I chosen it?

My second underwater metal detector is a basic pinpointer with numerous settings to better adapt to your situation. It comes with vibration, audio and vibration and audio modes for alert via single button for one-touch activation.  Aside from being simple to operate, the gadget is just 11 inches long, weighing just 0.34 pounds making it highly portable. And because the gadget can be entirely submerged up to 60 feet, you can explore deeper into lakes, rivers or the ocean with ease.

3. Wedigout Fully Waterproof Pin Pointer Metal Detector

My final underwater metal detector provides for great quality with vibration and liquid crystal display (LCD) detection. Its basic structure makes it easy to operate while underwater up to 100 feet below the surface.  See its specifications below:
