6 Best Gifts For The Fisherman

Hey there my fellow fishing enthusiasts. If you are an avid fisherman with a birthday, anniversary or the like coming up then turn away now as this post is not for you. This post is for those looking for that special something for you as I outline my 6 best gifts for the fisherman who has everything. Now of course this doesn’t mean you can’t get us something we already have but I have gone a little rogue here to list the things that we always want, but probably wouldn’t purchase for ourselves… Let’s check them out…

Standard gifts

Before we start however, I did touch on above the fact that when it comes to fishing, there are some things that we can always do with including:

  • Tackle – we can never have enough tackle – just sneak in and look for sizes first.
  • Tackle bags/boxes
  • Clothing – fishing shirts are cool!
  • Stuff for the bar – fishing banners and signs etc.
  • Knife sets
  • Headlamps
  • And of course, we will never screw our nose up at a new rod or reel – again, just check out what we already have and try and match it with a newer, better model.

The above is also a good starting point if you are purchasing for a beginner who is just starting out. In this case, a good budget priced rod and reel combo will also work well.

However, for those who have everything, here is some cool stuff to consider…

1. LED Flashlight Gloves

If your fisherman likes to go out chasing the big ones at night, then why not grab them some LED flashlight gloves. Chances are they will already have a fishing headlamp, however these are little gloves with little LED lights on the index finger and thumb and perfect for changing lures or rigging lines at night.

And if that is not enough, they can also be used for anything else that is performed in tight, dark spaces such as working on cars, boat engines or even sewing and when camping as well.

2. Electric Scaler

In my experience, there are two categories that those who like to keep and eat their catches fall into:

  • Those who keep the skin on – like me – I love the texture of the skin on the fillet
  • Those who peel the skin off

Now, if your intended gift recipient is someone who cooks their fish with the skin on (or you are sick of getting errant scales stuck in your teeth) then you could do worse than picking up an electric scaler.

These are waterproof, cordless (chargeable) and perfect for scaling their catch whilst out on the boat, on the beach or anywhere else that they like to scale their fish.

And while you are at it, check out the electric fish filleting knives as well.

3. Insulated Cup/Mug

Our next option is another that whilst being purchased as a fishing related gift, can also be used in any number of other scenarios as well. Insulated cups or mugs (often call travel mugs) are those that keep beverages cold/hot for a good amount of time – which is great when sitting on a beach/boat for extended periods.

There are plenty of options out there so when choosing, consider for the following:

  • Price – In my experience, insulated mugs are definitely an area where price matters. I am not expecting you to pay a fortune here however I would highly advise avoidance of the cheapies.
  • Insulation: Insulation is key and can be made of glass, plastic or stainless steel (my recommendation for fishing as they will not shatter if dropped on rocks etc). Regardless of how it is done however, if it is not insulated the cup is not going to do what you want it to do.
  • Lids: Most come with lids as part of their insulation specifications. If you can get one that is spill proof (after all, boats rock and sand is uneven) then you are on the right track.
  • Washability: Check to see if the mug is dishwasher-safe. If they are strong enough for the dishwasher, then you can expect that they can handle the rigours of fishing as well.

4. Portable Fish Finder

In technical terms, fish finders work via the transmission of ultrasonic waves from a transducer/sensor generally mounted on the bottom of a boat or kayak. These waves then bounce off of the bottom (for depth) as well as structures and fish which is then viewed via the screen mounted on top of the vessel. In simple terms, they are little devices that help us identify where the fish are.

Our next option then is a little portable fish finder option that can be used in a boat, kayak, on the river bank or even in the surf. There is no wiring necessary and once the transponder has been deployed into the water, then the visuals are managed via a mobile/cell phone app. This is the prefect gift for the avid fisherman who fishes in a number of spots or environments.

5. Gift Subscriptions

Ok, so we all know what a subscription box is, and you may or may not be surprised to know that they are also available for fisherman. There are a number of options out there based on the type of inclusions wanted (tackle, lures, clothing etc.) and/or the fish species being chased.

Prices obviously vary based on the size and type of box as well as frequency of delivery. One advantage here also is that subscriptions can generally be paid monthly meaning you don’t have to outlay all of the cost at once. Some common options include:

Or if you are looking for something else, then a simple online search for fishing subscription boxes should do the trick.

6. Fishing Charters

And finally, a very popular gift item for the fanatical (or even casual) fisherman is a fishing charter. This allows them to go out and fish for species or in areas that they may not generally get to such as deep sea or for a prized catch such as Marlin etc. Alternatively, you can send them out with an ‘expert’ who can teach them more about the areas/species that they generally fish for (Bass, Salmon, Cod etc.).

In most cases, you will find that everything is provided (rods, reels, tackle, bait etc.) so all they will need to do is turn up. Unfortunately however there are a few shonks in this industry so before you purchase I would check the credentials of the operators, where they actually take you and of course, reviews. That way you know you are sending them out with professional operators who can either give them the best chance of catching something, or at least teach them a thing or two.

And best of all, if you can arrange it properly, you can send them with their friends as well.

Conclusion

And there they are – 6 best gifts for the fisherman who has everything. I hope it has been helpful and as usual, please let me know of your experiences or any other tips you may have.

Also, please do not hesitate to comment below if you have any questions, concerns, corrections or would like me to check anything else out for you.

Until next time

Have fun

Paul

  1. Excellent gift ideas, Paul! My favorite that I love getting is a charter as a gift. I don’t have to get the boat ready or worry about running out of line. You hit the best gifts. Fishing burns through the fishing tackle. That’s just normal. It’s great to get that as a gift. I’m going to put these gift ideas on my Amazon wish list. I could use any of them. One item you might want to add is a great seat cushion. While I’m sitting fishing my butt gets numb. Hope to see you out fishing!

  2. I have always wanted to go fishing but I am surrounded by people that do not like the outdoor. Also because I do not stay in an area that allows fishing but it is something I still have to do one day. This article will come in handy the day I do decide to go fishing.
