What are fly fishing nets?

A fly fishing net, also known as a landing net, is an essential tool for fly anglers. Essentially, they are a big piece of mesh on a metal or plastic handle that is used to scoop up the fish then caught.

When a net is used, fishers experience fewer tangled lines and last-second break-offs whilst or the fish, it means less stress when landing, faster hook removal, and limited damage to their flesh as well.

What should you be looking for?

The following outlines some factors to consider as you look for a good fly fishing net.

  1. Type
  2. Material
  3. Handle length
  4. Handle grip
  5. Additions

Type

Fly fishing nets come in a wide array of styles, some of which offer more than just retrieving your catch. The most common types are as follows:

  1. Fixed frames and handle: This type of fly fishing net is commonly used to catch and land sizable fish. Their sturdy construction is helpful in containing your big catch for you to hold.
  2. Scoop: Nets of this kind are typically held in place by a magnetic release attached to a retractor and commonly used for grayling and river trout.
  3. Collapsible: The last group of fly fishing nets has a foldable frame, making them easy to pack and slip into a bag or backpack. You can also attach it to your fishing vest and bring it to the water when you hook a fish.

Material

The material of your fly fishing net significantly affects its durability. Typically, rubber, nylon and even carbon fiber and fiberglass are the most common construction materials.

Rubber nets are the most popular and best option for most anglers as they are long-lasting, difficult to spot in the water and inexpensive.

Carbon fiber and fiberglass nets are noteworthy for their lightweight build and durability however at a slightly higher cost.

Handle length

Another factor to consider is the length of the fly fishing net’s handle. The proper handle length is determined by several factors, including the water environment, the size and weight of the fish as well as your fly fishing location.

Longer handles, for example, are ideal for fly fishing from a boat because they allow you to reach the water without falling. On the other hand, nets with short handles are practical to be used if you are fishing on riverbanks.

Handle grip

When it comes to the handling grip, rubber is almost always used on aluminum and fiberglass fly fishing nets. This ensures a firm grip and keeps the fly fishing net from slipping out of your hand as you land a fish.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. Net magnets: These are connected to the net’s lanyard and are useful in preventing the product from floating away.
  2. Net retractors: The retractors are helpful because they keep your net secure and out of the way as you fly fish.

My three recommendations broken down

So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. SF Fly Fishing Landing Net

This first landing net is durable in its construction enabling it to withstand aggressive trout etc. and carefully designed to protect the fish as well.  See its specifications below:

  • Brand: SF
  • Handle length: 9 inches
  • Material: Laminated bamboo and hardwood
  • Dimension: 25.7 x 6.57 x 2.6 inches
  • Weight: 0.70 pounds

Other inclusions:

  • Stretchable spring coil
  • Aluminum carabiner
  • Magnetic release

Why have I chosen it?

This net includes magnets and a coil retractor to keep the fly fishing net within reach and made of laminated bamboo and hardwood, which provides strength and an appealing appearance. The manufacturers used a soft rubber design for the net to protect the fish as it tries to escape.  This is a great lightweight option for those wandering the river bank as they look for a good place to throw a line.

2. ForEverlast Inc. Floating Fishing Landing Net

This next fly fishing net is a common choice among anglers due to its excellent functionality. The net construction is well-design so that fish caught in it would not harm themselves and should you accidentally dropped it into the water, it floats. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: ForEverlast
  • Handle length: 3 inches
  • Material: Blend
  • Dimension: 2.31 x 0.3 x 4.89 inches
  • Weight: 0.40 pounds

Other inclusions:

  • Large net opening
  • Non-snag fish netting

Why have I chosen it?

The net’s non-snag build incorporates a bottom design capable of holding a large number of fish simultaneously and will  not damage gills or scales as they struggle. Its floating design makes it perfect for both river banks and boats, kayaks or wading as well.

3. PLUSINNO Fly Fishing Net

This last profiled landing net keeps both the angler and fish safe by employing a unique design. The magnetic system is durable enough to remain intact despite the weight of your catch with a quick release clip and lanyard to avoid accidents as well.  See its specifications below:

  • Dimension: 22 x 11.5 x 1 inches

Why have I chosen this?

This is another excellent fly fishing net that provides a better landing for your catch. It has a convenient belt clip, making it easier to transport to wherever places you want and furthermore, it can vanish when submerged preventing the fish from becoming alarmed.

It has a foldable pole that makes it easier to transport and also includes a durable and helpful carabiner to attach the magnetic net release to your outfit.
