What are camping survival shovels?

A camping survival shovel is a multi-function tool that provides options for digging, chopping, sawing and any number of other uses dependent upon the option chosen. In fact, just think of it as a very very large swiss army knife.

They give the user plenty of items that are all essential for survival purposes and as above, are perfect for different situations such as digging, planting, cutting, fishing, hunting, and many more.

What should you be looking for?

Below are some factors to consider as you look for a good camping shovel set:

  1. Construction material
  2. Size and portability
  3. Weight
  4. Handle
  5. Additions

Construction material

Camping survival shovels are expected to do some challenging jobs such as digging dirt and cutting branches. For this very reason, they should be made of strong, durable materials as follows:

  1. Stainless steel: Shovels from this material are easy to care for because they can handle rust and corrosion. The downside of stainless steel metal is it might bend under pressure.
  2. High carbon steel: This type of steel is popular for high-quality tools as the blades are more rigid and less prone to dulling. Some manufacturers apply a protective powder coating to their carbon steel however compared with stainless steel, these shovels require a little more maintenance.
  3. Alloy steel: Alloy steel is a combination of the first two types and is extremely durable and rustproof.

Size and portability

In terms of size, a survival shovel is not as large as a regular shovel and are typically around 16 inches long. However as camping survival shovels are all meant to be portable, you should look for whether the shovel is compact, folding, or not. Some even allow you to wear them on your belt with a pouch and a loop protected by a sheath.

Weight

As with your other camping gear, the survival shovel should be lightweight.

Handle

Camping shovels have different kinds of handles – fixed or foldable. A foldable handle is ideal since it is very portable, but with each fold or joint comes the possibility of a weak spot. On the other hand, a straight wooden handle provides more sturdiness, which is especially necessary for heavy work.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. Flashlight: This small item can help you light your path or illuminate whatever it is you have to do in dark places.
  2. Knife: This becomes handy in cutting small items you need, such as the stake for a DIY tent.
  3. Ice breaker cone: This can be very useful as an ice pick should you encounter an incident when ice fishing.
  4. Emergency whistle: This item becomes very useful in alerting others about your location.
  5. Compass: This add-on helps you navigate your way out of the woods suppose you get lost.
  6. Screw driver:  Always useful.
