Hey there anglers, and welcome to my post where we will check out my three best lures for Sturgeon to chase around this year. Sturgeon are a dinosaur-like fish that feature on the bucket lists of more anglers than almost any other species. They grow large, strong and make for some great social media bragging rights.
And although Sturgeon are better known as a fish that likes a good live bait, there are some good lure options out there for them as well. So to help you out, I have had a good look around and come up with three decent options below. Let’s check them out…
My three recommended lures for sturgeon
I will review these in more detail below, but if you just want to get moving without all the carry-on, my recommended products are listed here for your convenience:
What are lures for Sturgeon?
As we all know, fishing lures are small, artificial objects that are often shaped like a fish’s prey with a hookset attached. Their primary purpose is to draw target fish to a fishing line.
Despite being one of the largest freshwater fish, the Sturgeon is one of the least aggressive and as above, are best caught on live bait and most often found eating worms, leeches and minnows on the bottoms of lakes and rivers.
When it comes to lures then, they must of course match the bait found in their local area (some lure oil helps here too) and one crucial tip is to use a heavy option to keep it on the bottom.
What should you be looking for?
The following factors should be considered as you look around for a good lure to meet your Sturgeon fishing needs.
- Type of lure
- Durability
- Size
- Life-like action
- Additions
Type of lure
As you are probably aware, there are a number of lure options available however for Sturgeon, the following are probably the best.
- Soft-bodied jigs – These soft lures can be purchased fully rigged or rigged on weighted hooks or jigheads. These lures are designed to be cast out and slowly reeled in. On the retrieve, you can let them sink a to the bottom via the weighted jig head. Go for those that mimic a live bait or a worm.
- Hard-bodied swimbaits – Lures with rigid bodies comprise two to six segments joined by hinged joints. These lures can be handcrafted or machine-made and come in different buoyancy levels. Again, go for heavier options as they’re ideal for covering larger fish habitats such as points, flats, and humps.
- Paddle tail swimbaits – These lures have a tail that looks like a kayak paddle and produces impressive swim action. Paddle tails are great for fishing in the weeds, where some of the best fish hide. You will need to purchase hooks and weights to rig onto these lures and ensure that the hook you select fits the body shape of the lure.
- Multi-jointed and glide swimbaits – The focus of these lures is on swim action. Multi-jointed swimbaits create a vast, smooth trail through the water with various segments. Swimbaits with a single joint in the middle or near the tail are also available. these can work for Sturgeon as their eyesight is poor and they will confuse them with live minnows or shad etc.
And when it comes to Sturgeon, leave the surface lures at home.
Durability
The majority of swimbaits are made of molded plastic and are either fashioned in a single piece or in sections to give them a more realistic side-to-side motion when they are drawn through the water. Modern swimbaits, however, provide a lot more advantages than just their swimming style.
Heat-treated plastic is poured into molds to create swimbaits. Different flavors, smells, colors and reflective elements are added to the mold’s plastic as it starts to cool. This process improves the chances of swimbaits attracting fish.
Size
Sturgeon are generally a big fish and because big baits catch big fish, many fishers opt for swimbaits because of their size. Large lures are the ideal choice if you’re hoping to land a fish such as a Sturgeon and look for options that typically range in length from 4 to 8 inches (10.2 to 20.3 cm).
Life-like action
Swimbait’s effectiveness in alluring the fish you are eyeing lies in its ability to mimic small fish. Swimbaits are made to look like the prey of different fish living in different environments.
and even though they don’t have great eyesight, when purchasing lures for Sturgeon, such as swimbaits, it is advisable to check how realistic the products look. Three-dimensional eyes and their swim-like action are necessary features and if the lures are luminescent, these could be a fantastic addition to attract further the sturgeon lying on the bottom.
Additions
Other potential additions include:
- Hooks: The majority of popular lures have #6 Treble Hooks attached. It’s a good idea to keep a few of these on hand to replace rusted or dull hooks.
- Number of pieces: Lures are often packaged in groups which is ideal as you can chop and change should the first option not lead to success.
- Built-in rattle: Some manufacturers were able to add a rattling sound at the tail of their swimbaits. This add-on improves the lure’s ability to attract fish.
