Hey there hunters and welcome to my post where we will check out my three best rifle bags to keep your firearms protected this year. For those who like to get out and about on a hunting trip, rifle bags are the most practical way of protecting your rifle.
They can assist in not only keeping your rifle clean, but also in maintaining accuracy as they not only shield your rifle from bumps and bangs but also stop other issues such as the scope being knocked out of alignment as well. So for those of you in the market for a good bag to protect your rifle I have had a look around and come up with three decent options below.
Let’s check them out.
My three recommended best rifle bags
I will review these in more detail below, but if you want to get moving without all the carry-on, my recommended products are listed here for your convenience:

What are rifle bags?
In short and as the name suggests, rifle bags are cases designed to protect and transport your rifle, shotgun, and/or any optics attached safely. These help protect your rifle in a number of ways including:
- Unauthorized users cannot access your hunting rifle when it is locked away in a soft or hard shell case. This allows you to keep control of the weapon even when it is not directly in your hands.
- As above, These bags provide protection for your rifle against bumps, bangs, and scratches while traveling. This is especially true for long guns that are equipped with optics and a good case will limit the amount of abuse your rifle receives, extending its life.

What should you be looking for?
The following factors should be considered as you look around for a good rifle bag to meet your transportation and protection needs.
- Type
- Durability
- Protection
- Capacity
- Pockets
- Additions
Type
When it comes to rifle bags, there are a number of options available as follows:
- Hard case: Rifle bags of this type are traditionally tough, box-style, hard-sided cases. They are typically made of injected-molded plastics and clip-shut. Look for options consisting of well-constructed bunkers with pressure relief valves, dual wall construction and laser-cut foam cutouts on the inside.
- Soft case: The second type of rifle case is the traditional soft, handbag-style carry case which usually has padded interiors to protect the rifle from impact. When enough extra storage pouches included, these can frequently overlap with drag bags. They are generally lighter, easier to carry around, pack in a trunk, and work with often at the expense of protective qualities.
- Backpack: You will also see backpack-style soft cases, typically used by hunters who need to travel long distances into the woods with all of their gear, including a scoped rifle that needs to be protected from the elements.
- Drag bag: A drag bag is distinguished by its ample storage capacity and high-quality protective construction. These rifle cases get their name because they are dragged behind a crawling sniper in the field however they have evolved into a reliable rifle case option in their own right over the years.
Durability
In addition to protecting the gun, the best rifle cases are durable. The required durability of your case is largely determined by what you intend to put it through and assuming you are not restricted to an indoor range, you should select a rifle case that can withstand the harsh conditions of outdoor hunting.
Check that the handles and straps are well-reinforced and has a shoulder strap with an adjustable sliding pad (that you can adjust depending on how you carry the case) will make trekking long distances with your rifle much more comfortable. Straps and handles can be made from reinforced nylon or tough leather.

Protection
A rifle case’s primary function is to protect your gun. The best rifle cases have enough padding to keep a rifle in place while also absorbing shock and securing the firearm inside the case. This prevents the rifle from bouncing around and possibly altering your focal points.
Capacity
This probably goes without saying but your rifle should have enough space inside the case to fit your rifle/s. To do this, measure your rifle from the butt to the end of the barrel and add 1 1/2 to 2 inches. (A good rule of thumb is to select a case a couple of inches longer than your rifle to ensure that it fits comfortably inside.) Check that the case holds your rifle, scope, and other accessories.
Next check if the case is wide or tall enough to accommodate any optics so if your rifle has a mounted scope, measure its height and the scope to ensure it will fit as you close the rifle bag.
Finally, consider the space you require for your additional equipment and accessories. One capacity-related benefit of buying soft rifle bags is that these products offer exterior pockets that are accessible without taking the case down and opening the main compartment.
Pockets
This is another must-have quality as pockets are necessary to keep and secure your other accessories. These pockets differ in size so consider what you will want to hold in them as you look around.
Additions
Other potential additions include:
- Padded backpacks: These become helpful if you decide to carry your rifle behind your back. For a more comfortable carry, the straps are cushioned.
- Velcro handle: This is a fantastic addition to help easily carry the rifle bag.
- Wrap-around straps: These are additional means to secure the rifle bag as you carry it around.
