4 Best Beach Carts for Surf Fishing

Father's Day Sale ! Up to 20% Off

Hey there my fellow fishing enthusiasts and welcome to my post covering my 4 best beach carts for surf fishing in 2021. Now for those of you who have seen any of my recent posts in regards to equipment for surf fishing will know that I am a proponent of traveling fairly light when it comes to getting myself onto the beach. However, there are times when a simple fishing backpack or bag is just not going to cut it.

We have a cart that we use when we go to the beach for day visits so I know just how handy they can be in terms of carrying everything we need for the day such as eskies, chairs, dry clothes, towels and so on… So it of course makes sense that these could also be useful for a daytime (or night time) fishing expedition as well. So let’s see if we can find some decent carts to get us, and all of our gear to the beach for some fishing…

My 4 recommended beach carts for surf fishing

I will review these in more detail below but if you just want to get moving without all the carry on, my 4 are listed here for your convenience:

What are beach carts?

As mentioned above, when I go fishing in the surf I like to jam everything into a fishing backpack and then carry my rod and rod holder in my hand as I head down to the beach. But in some cases, you may want to take just a little more with you – especially if you are planning to be there all day or most of the night. When this happens, the easiest way I have found is to get yourself a beach cart.

Yep, just like when you were a kid dragging that little red cart all over the neighbourhood. Although these days the teddy bear and comic books have been replaced with such items as:

  • Tackle bags
  • Eskies
  • Towels
  • Tools
  • Chairs
  • Rod holders (some come with these attached)

And anything else you need when attempting to get all of your fishing gear to the beach – remember we only do the one trip right!!

Types of beach carts

As with anything else to do with fishing, there are a number of different types of beach carts to choose from. Some are the four wheeled, foldable ones that are actually designed for the family beach trip but work just as well for fishing whilst others are two wheeled and designed specifically or this purpose.

Some come with chairs, rod holders or even eskies included and for those trudging through soft sand, some have big thick wheels that make that trip a little easier as well.

What should you be looking for?

So, with all of the options that I have listed above (and there are more that I haven’t) let’s check out some of the things to look at as you consider your beach cart purchase.

Terrain – We all know that beaches are sandy, but some are more so than others so if your will be dragging your cart over dunes etc., then you will definitely want to be checking out beach carts for soft sand – you know, the ones with the big wide tyres. Alternatively, if the road is your main thoroughfare to the beach, then some hard plastic or rubber tyres might work better.

Size – This one is simple – the more stuff you need to take, the larger storage size you will need.

Additions – This next option really comes down to whether you want to use your cart just for fishing or for other adventures as well. If just for fishing, then you may want to choose an option with rod holders and tool clips included or even one with a nice chair to sit on whilst you chase your dinner.

Extendable handle – If you are tall – get one with an extendable handle – trust me, you will regret it if you don’t.

Frame material – Beach conditions will make stuff rust – check the composition of your cart prior to purchase.

What Do I use?

We have a trolley that we actually purchased for general family beach use. It is great for where we go as we generally have gear such as snorkel and goggles, bags full of food and balls etc. for the kids that we take with us on top of the usual towels etc.

It is a strong metal (hence my rust comment above) and does not have an extendable handle (again , see my comment above). It does however have nice rubber wheels that are large enough to work through soft sand and will fit a decent sized esky, my tackle bag, rod holder and bait bucket etc. when I use it for fishing.

At the end of the day, I would hate to not have one but if I had my time again, I would get one that is aluminium rather than metal (as they are lighter) and definitely one with an extendable handle.

My four recommendations broken down

Now, I usually only highlight three recommendations in my posts but as mentioned above, there are a lot of different carts available online. And at the end of the day I found four that I really liked so taking into consideration the information above, I recommend any of the following options:

1. Mac Sports Utility Beach Wagon Cart

The first cart I have chosen is for those of you looking for an all round cart that will suit both the fishing trip and family outing. It is made of strong plastic, is foldable for easy storage and comes with thick, hard plastic wheels to handle most sandy conditions. Its specification include:

  • Construction – Plastic frame and durable 600D Fabric liner
  • Foldable – Yes
  • Extendable handle – Yes
  • Storage size – 36.2″ x 21.4″ x 24.6″
  • Weight of product – 24.5 lb (11kg)
  • Carrying capacity – 150 lb (70kg)

Other inclusions:

  • Mesh drink holders and carry bag (wallets, phone etc.)
  • Comes with carry bag for ease of storage

Why have I chosen it?

This is a great one for those looking for a decent, versatile and lightweight cart that will handle beach fishing with ease as well as any other need you may have for it. It is easy to setup and fold down and of course comes with that all important extendable handle.

2. Berkley Fishing Cart

This next one is for those who have a bit of gear but don’t really need to go with a larger cart. Built specifically for fishing, it comes with 4 removable rod holders and an integrated seat and cutting board. There is also enough space inside for your tackle and/or a cooler bag full of coldies. Specifications include:

  • Construction – Corrosion-resistant aluminum frame with electrostatic finish and heavy-duty fabric
  • Foldable – No
  • Extendable handle – Yes
  • Storage size – Not stated
  • Weight of product – Not stated
  • Carrying capacity – Up to 300 lb (136kg)

Other inclusions:

  • Thick plastic wheels to account for most environments
  • Waterproof compartment

Why have I chosen it?

I like this one as it is compact and can allow you to carry more than one rod etc. with ease. And best of all, you will not need to bring a chair as this one doubles as one as well. All in all, for those who like to travel light but still have enough to warrant a cart, this one may just be the ticket.

3. Mac Sports 2-in-1 Chair + Cargo Cart

Ok, so this next one is probably more chair than cart but for those looking for a lazy day with the rod in the holder then this might just be the one for you. You see it is a fold out lounge chair that converts to a cart as you transport it to and from the beach. Let’s check out the specifications:

  • Construction – Polyester, aluminum, plastic
  • Foldable – Yes
  • Extendable handle – Yes
  • Storage size – 18. 9″ X 18. 9″ X 18. 9″ (cart)
  • Weight of product – 20.9 lb (10kg)
  • Carrying capacity – 100lb (45kg) cart and 225 lb (100kg) chair

Other inclusions:

  • Thick plastic wheels to account for most environments
  • Lightweight for ease of use

Why have I chosen it?

Did I mention it is a lounge chair? Apart from that, in terms of fishing it has a large enough storage section as a cart to handle everything you could need with wide wheels and extendable handle (you know I love them). Also perfect for cross use in general beach activities or even for those afternoon concerts in the park.

4. Juggernaut Fish and Marine Cart

And finally, for the avid fisherman who wants a cart that will do the job, this one is a little more expensive but contains everything you need to set it up and keep it that way for future trips as well. The cart is made of sturdy aluminum and stainless steel with a weight capacity to handle everything you will need for a day on the sand (with sand tyres to match). Its specifications include:

  • Construction – Aluminum and heavy-duty stainless steel
  • Foldable – No
  • Extendable handle – Yes
  • Storage size – 27″ x 40″ x 30″
  • Weight of product – Not Stated
  • Carrying capacity – 220 lb (100kg)

Other inclusions:

  • Large low pressure balloon tires built for the outdoors and sand
  • 8 Rod holders built onto sides

Why have I chosen it?

This one may not be as versatile as the others but for those who fish regularly this is a model that you can set up and simply reuse day after day. There are more than enough rod holders to include nets and even an umbrella as well as plenty of room for an esky, tackle box and folding chair.
