What are boots for hunting?

Hunting boots are outdoor shoes built to last and keep your feet warm and dry whilst out in the wilderness – not to mention support should you need to walk around looking for your target game. To withstand the rigors of hunting, they are usually heavy-duty, made of rubber or similar insulating material as well as providing adequate protection and traction for outdoor conditions.

To blend in with the surroundings, almost all hunting boots are camouflaged as well.

What should you be looking for?

The following factors should be considered as you look for a good pair of boots for your hunting needs.

  1. Durability
  2. Soles
  3. Boot height
  4. Boot weight
  5. Comfort
  6. Waterproofing
  7. Additions

Durability

When it comes to hunting, durability is key. Look for full-grain, one-piece leather uppers stitched directly to the sole. Whatever type of boots you require, make sure they are made of high-quality materials with high thread count fabric, such as 500 denier Cordura and high-quality leather.

Soles

As the soles of the boots will carry the brunt of your weight, they must be able to provide you with firm footing regardless of the terrain.  If you are a light traveler, you can usually get away with a thinner sole, but it must still provide adequate arch support and stability. Choose boots with deeper lugs for loose terrain or snow and stickier rubber for rocky terrain.

Boot height

The height of the hunting boots is guided by how you intend to use them. Choose higher hunting boots if you anticipate encountering water, mud, or snow whereas shorter boots work well in a warmer, drier climate. However, you should still ensure that your hunting boots have the necessary ankle support.

Boot weight

As you look for your boots, choose the lightest options available while meeting all other requirements. Keep in mind however that lightweight materials are not always as durable as their heavier counterparts, so consider how demanding the terrain will be on your footwear.

A thick, full-grain leather upper is your best bet if you expect to deal with sharp and/or steep inclines. However, a lighter-weight boot with a fabric upper should suffice if you’re out on the prairie.

Comfort

Let’s face it, an uncomfortable pair of hunting boots is the worst. For this reason, select hunting footwear that will give your feet enough room to move.  To assist here, get your feet professionally measured, paying attention to both length and width to ensure you’re buying the best size.

Waterproofing

Waterproof boots are necessary if you intend to spend time outside, regardless of the weather. You can confidently cross rivers and streams with high-quality waterproofing. Boots that contain a Gore-Tex waterproof breathable lining will cost a bit more than other hunting boots, but the waterproofing will last longer than simple sprays.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. Camouflage: Although this factor is not required, having boots that are camouflaged can help you hide from your prey.
  2. Back tab: This part aids in the removal of the boot and is also useful when carrying it around.

FAQ

Are hunting boots worth it?

In a word, yes! A good pair of hunting boots will provide for warmth and protection when out in the wilderness. Furthermore, they are waterproof and durable meaning they will protect your feet whether you are sitting and waiting or walk around looking for your prey.
