Hey there campers and welcome to my post where we will check out my 3 best insulated camping cups to sip from this year. Camping cups of course may be considered a necessary camping item on everyone’s outdoor list. And if these are insulated, then they not only help you enjoy your hot drinks on those colder mornings, but can even keep your favorite beverages cold as well.
Finding the best insulated camping cup for your needs can be tricky however as there are countless products to choose from. So let’s check out some good options for your next camping trip.
My three recommended insulated cups for camping
I will review these in more detail below, but if you just want to get moving without all the carry-on, my recommended products are listed here for your convenience:

What are insulated camping cups?
Insulated cups, like travel mugs and water bottles, are great for keeping your drinks cool or hot for more extended periods. There are various types of insulation available, ranging from foam, air or even vacuum insulation, which typically has a double-wall design.
These two walls serve two functions: preventing condensation and maintaining the temperature of your beverage by preventing heat or cold from escaping. Because heat cannot be transferred through air, the temperature of your hot drink remains constant, remaining hot on the inside and cold to the touch on the outside.
And for those with a lid, you will often find that should you leave ice in the cup before bed, it will still be there in the morning!

What should you be looking for?
Below are some of the main factors you should take into account as you shop for a good insulated drinking cup for camping:
- Type
- Insulation
- Materials used
- Capacity
- Lid design
- Additions
Type
Insulated camping mugs are available in a number of variations including:
- Tumbler: The tumbler-style coffee cups are the most common and adaptable. They are typically tall and tapered toward the bottom, resembling a water glass. They fit easily into cup holders due to the lack of a handle and whilst not completely spill-proof, their lids prevent spillages and aid in heat and cold retention. These are great for that afternoon wine as well.
- Thermos or Flask: These outdoor cups are completely spill-proof. They are ideal for people who want to keep their beverages hot or cold throughout the day however they do tend to prioritize insulation over ease of drinking.
- Mug: For this kind, the product resembles the traditional ceramic mug. Mug-designed cups are shorter and wider and have a built-in handle. The handle makes them easier to hold, but it also prevents them from fitting in most cup holders, limiting their utility. Use these for beer!
- Brand-specific: Some camping mugs are sold as part of mess kits or camping cookware sets. They usually fit snugly into the other containers making packing a breeze.
Insulation
Here camping mugs may be single or double-wall insulated.
- Single insulation is a single stainless steel wall (or whatever metal material is used) that keeps drinks hot or cold but allow some heat to pass through. Heat and cold may be contained, but not for as long as some double insulated models.
- A double-wall vacuum-sealed bottle or tumbler has a main body made of two walls of stainless steel or similar materials. The walls are kept slightly apart to ensure the formation of a vacuum which restricts the release of temperature from the vessel.
Materials used
Camping mugs today can be crafted from a wide array of materials. These also contribute to the quality of the product you decide to purchase:
- Stainless steel: The most common type of mug in this category is stainless steel. Manufacturers can easily create a vacuum insulated mug out of this material, making it highly effective at retaining heat or cold.
- Titanium: Mugs made from this type of material are more than just a portable option. This material also allows you to heat your hot beverage over an open flame without fear of damaging the mug.
- Plastics: These cups, such as polypropylene, are commonly used in camping mugs. The majority of them are BPA-free, which is a good thing however they tend to be best for keeping drinks cold only.
- Ceramic: Mugs from this material are a tried-and-true camping accessory. Ceramic is exceptionally long-lasting and retains heat better than plastic but not as well as stainless-steel insulated models.

Capacity
The majority of camping cups have a capacity ranging between 14 ounces and 16 ounces. Smaller cups usually fall into the 12-ounce range while larger ones exceed the 20-ounce mark.
It really just comes down to what you plan to drink from it and how much of that drink you want in the cup at once I guess.
Lid design
In my opinion, if you are looking to keep drinks at optimum heat or cold, then a lid is critical. This is simply because the lid’s design determines not only how spill-proof the mug is but also provides another barrier for temperature to escape. There are of course a number of variations here as follows:
- Lidless mugs are the most basic and convenient. They do not, however, protect against spills.
- Lids with a sliding or twisting tab are usually very easy to open and close and provide great temperature retention. They are however not as good at providing spill protection.
- Flip lids are fairly spill-proof due to a piece of plastic that latches down over the hole and can be flipped up. They will also hold temperature well if the lid itself is rubber sealed as well.
Additions
Other potential additions include:
- Non-slip base – This extra feature prevents the product from sliding towards the ground, messing with your drinks.
- Measuring lines – The lines help you identify how high your drink is. You can also use the camping cup as a measuring tool if ever you need it in your outdoor recipes.
- BPA-free – BPA is a chemical that can be harmful to humans, so in buying any kind of products, including camping mugs, be sure they are BPA free
- Carabiner clip – Mugs with carabiner clip handles are easily attached to your camping backpack.
What do I use?
Ok, for us it is Yeti all the way and I admit that we have potentially gone a little overboard with our purchases here as we appear to have one for every occasion including, steins, wine tumblers, water mugs, coffee cups, water bottles and even beer coolers.
They all come with sealed lids and double walled stainless steel and have even kept ice all day in a cup that was locked in a car in the height of summer. There are many on the market that will do the job however I cannot go past these as someone who does not like condensation on the cup or drinks going warm.

My three recommendations broken down
So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:
1. Life Gear Stainless Steel Double Walled Mug
This first product is a double-wall insulation camping mug crafted using stainless steel to retain its temperature for a long time. It has a carabiner handle that you can use to attach the mug with ease to your camping backpacks making it good for hikers and day trippers as well. See its specifications below:

- Capacity: 10 ounces
- Weight: .2 pounds
- Dimension: 3.2 x 2.6 x 4.5 inches

This stainless camping mug is an excellent addition to improve your outdoor eating experience. Whether your drinks are hot or cold, this product maintains its temperature and can hold up 10 ounces. Its price also means it can be purchased just for your camping kit as well.
2. 2 Pack Insulated Travel Tumblers
My next option is perfect for a couple of campers and comes with a complete set of drinking and cleaning accessories. The lids are straw-friendly and BPA-free with a double wall vacuum insulation for maintaining that perfect temperature. See its specifications below:
- Brand: Cozy Home

Why have I chosen it?
The double insulation for this product is very effective giving it the ability to maintain the temperature of your beverages up to five hours. If you do not prefer drinking using the lid, a stainless straw is readily available upon purchase and aside from its impressive temperature retention qualities, there is no condensation because this camping mug is sweatless, too. This is the perfect option for campers, travelers and day picnickers alike.
3. YETI Rambler Insulated Cup
This final product is in my opinion the cream of the insulated cup crop and as above, our product of choice in this category. It is manufactured using kitchen-grade stainless steel with a no-sweat design to keep your hands and table dry even if you drink a cold beverage. And it is dishwasher-safe too. See its specifications below:

Why have I chosen it?
Yeti cupware is made tough and perfect for outdoor adventures and its Duracoat coating does not peel or fade. In addition to its double-insulated wall, the magnetic slider on the lid secures your drinks’ warm or cold temperature. Again, I have used these for a while in both the home and whilst out camping, they do the job perfectly and do not break!
