What are waders for duck hunting?

Hunting waders are similar to fishing waders in that they are essentially waterproof boots attached to overalls that help hunters walk into water as they look for, or retrieve prey.  The overalls should keep you dry, while the dedicated wading boots will give you secure traction as you walk and wade through the water or over rocks etc.

However, because of the broader variety of environments you may encounter while hunting, there are even more options available, such as hip waders, chest waders, waist-high waders, and more.

What should you be looking for?

The following factors should be considered as you look for a good pair of waders for your hunting needs:

  1. Construction materials
  2. Stocking or boot foot
  3. Seams
  4. Insulation
  5. Camouflage
  6. Additions

Construction materials

Most duck hunting waders are made of neoprene – a synthetic rubber that offers good insulation and a robust waterproof seal. Many prefer this thick rubber design as it performs well in cold temperatures and provides excellent insulation.

Some however are made of  Gore-Tex or heavy-duty nylon leading to a more breathable and lightweight design with a watertight seal. The advantages of lighter materials include better breathability, mobility and all-season use however they will need a warmer layer system to be worn in the colder months.

Stocking or boot foot

Almost all dedicated waterfowl hunters will opt for one-piece boot foot waders over stocking foot waders, which require purchasing wading boots. Due to their simplicity, ruggedness, and superior insulating properties, boot foot waders are the clear winner in this category.

The boot foot design makes it simple to put on the waders, but it provides less foot support than its stocking foot counterpart. On the other hand, stocking foot waders are more prone to trapping mud and rocks between the wading boot and the wader.

Seams

Duck hunting waders with reinforced seams provide improved leak prevention and protect you from unexpected seepage on days when you are forced to stay in your hunting shelter  for longer than usual.

Reinforced seams can be created using any combination of extra stitching, an additional layer of the primary material, an additional layer of an alternative material, or chemically with a waterproofing agent.

Insulation

When it comes to insulation, the proper amount keeps you warm without overheating and sweating. Many days will begin cold in the morning but quickly warm up to pleasant temperatures by early afternoon meaning several thin layers of clothing beneath your waders are the key to proper heat retention and comfort.

Camouflage

Waders that come with camouflage designs help conceal your presence from your target waterfowl. This is very helpful as you hide in plain sight after spreading your duck decoys.

Additions

Other potential additions include

  1. Pockets: These are placed strategically across the wader to have your essentials within reach.
  2. Adjustable suspenders: These are useful to ensure that the duck-hunting wader is a perfect fit for the waterfowl hunter.
  3. Shell holder: You can carefully arrange your shotgun shells in the shell holder of the duck-hunting wader.
