Hey there my fellow fishing enthusiasts, today’s post has come about based on a meme I saw that other day. It was something along the lines of:
“If your wife is angry at you – go fishing. She will still be angry when you get back but at the least you have been fishing!”
And whilst that is intended as a joke, it was a comment below that got me thinking. Someone came on and said that if his wife gets angry about him fishing all the time, he just tells her he is looking after his health. Does he have a point? Is fishing good for you? Let’s run through it all below:
So, is it?
To answer that question quickly, it does appear that there are many health benefits of fishing. I know that for me fishing is a great way to relieve stress and I get extra activity in paddling my kayak as well. And much of my research outlines that the act of catching a fish may be good for your self-esteem as well – after all – those brag photos have to make you feel good right?
The other side of this is that fishing is an activity that can be as active or inactive as you like. If you’re looking for a way to relax, you can simply cast your line into any body of water and just sit back and watch the world go by. Alternatively, you can always hike or paddle to your fishing grounds as well.
So, in short, yes it is good for you and below is why.

Ways fishing is good for you
Ok, so let’s check out some ways that fishing can be considered good for you…
Fishing provides a sense of peace and relaxation
In terms of relaxation, the fact that fishing takes you away from the stresses of the real world such as work, electronics or media distractions just has to be a plus. The soothing soundscape of the water helps people find relief from their daily lives by providing an escape into nature to provide enjoyment and relieve boredom.
And again, without getting too medical, sitting and watching the world go by can go a long way to lowering stress levels too. After all, sitting on your favourite fishing chair out in the fresh air, watching the water run by can sound like heaven for many. For others, the interaction with the kids, their family or friends as they fish can do it as well.
You are out in the sun
Everything you read about fishing and safety will go to great lengths to explain that whilst fishing, you need to take all careful precautions from the sun such as using sunscreen and wearing a hat. And whilst that is absolutely true, it should also be remembered that the sun actually provides a lot of good as well.
The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, which according to the Medical News Today website, can provide the following advantages:
- supporting healthy bones
- managing calcium levels
- reducing inflammation
- supporting the immune system and glucose metabolism
- lowering blood pressure (which helps reduce stress as per above)
So don’t be afraid to get out in the sun when you fish – just make sure you don’t get burnt.
It’s a great way to get some exercise
When those who don’t fish think of fishing, they tend to think of it as just a means of sitting around doing not much as your line sits in the water – which obviously in some cases is absolutely true and a great way to relieve stress. However, it can also serve as a means of getting some exercise as well. This can include:
- Walking to your fishing spot – Not all fish are found right in front of the car park so there are times when you may need to walk to your fishing spot.
- Kayaking to your fishing spot – As with walking above – paddling and fishing is great way to get exercise.
And of course if you have ever gone out for some deep sea fishing, you will know how strenuous it can be just keeping your balance on a boat or pulling in a big fish.
Fishing improves your concentration
One of the things that I love about fishing is the fact that in many cases, you have to think about the strategies you are going to use to lure that big one. And in fear of undoing all that relaxation talk above, this can be quite the mind turner in terms of working out:
- What lures to use – and when to change them
- Gear, line and tackle requirements
- When to go
- What the tides are doing
- Wind direction
- Seasonal adjustments for bait
- and so on
Believe it or not, it is possible to keep the old brain working whilst relaxing – especially if all this concentration is taking your mind away from the stresses of real life. And of course (and please don’t take this as being disrespectful) for those who have left the workforce or retired, this concentration is a great way to keep the mind active as well.
Eating fish is good for you too
And finally, whilst we have discussed above all of the physical and mental advantages of fishing, the actual outcomes of it all can be healthy for you as well. Fish is great to eat and provides the body with many much-needed nutrients too such as:
- Omega 3 fatty acids (especially in such species as Salmon, Tuna and Mackerel).
- Minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium.
- Vitamin D and B2.
It is also a great source of protein as well. So as long as it is cooked in a healthy manner (avoid the fish and chips) then the health benefits will last way past the actual trip itself.
