Hey there campers, and welcome to my post covering my 3 best portable fans for camping in 2021. When camping in warm or hot weather, a muggy tent can ruin an otherwise pleasant camping experience especially if windows and ventilation system are insufficient. This is where a tent fan comes in handy, for it can effectively augment the airflow within your tent.

So with that in mind, let’s check out some good portable camping fan options below…

My three recommended portable fans for camping

I will review these in more detail below, but if you just want to get moving without all the carry-on, my three are listed here for your convenience:

What are portable fans for camping?

Portable camping fans are made to provide campers with good air circulation, cooling their bodies as they enjoy nature during hot days and humid nights. These gadgets are usually battery-powered, compact and lightweight although some also have AC adapters so that you can plug them into your portable power stations as well.

The latest portable fans also have more to offer than improved airflow with additional features such as LED lights, remote-controls, removable or adjustable stands, backup power banks, etc. also included.

What should you be looking for?

Below are some of the main factors you should take into account as you shop for portable camping fans:

  1. Type of portable camping fan
  2. Power source
  3. Size
  4. Durability
  5. Noise
  6. Airflow
  7. Other features it has

Type of portable camping fan

Generally, there are two types of portable camping fans are available – standing fans and hanging fans.

Akin to ceiling fans, hanging camping fans work well inside spacious and sturdy tents. Air is circulated from above by suspending the fan allowing the airflow to reach a larger area.

On the other hand, stand-up tent fans mainly possess a broad base that allows you to set it up anywhere you find necessary. Because of their simplicity, standing camping fans are easier to install than hanging fans. However, because they generally send cool air in a single direction, they do not circulate air as well as hanging fans do.

Power Source

Typically, tent fans get their power from AC adapters or rechargeable batteries (much like a smart phone battery) or both. If you plan on staying at a campsite for an extended period, an AC adapter may be helpful. However, it will only work if your campsite has electricity or if you have brought a portable camping generator or solar panel with you. Having a tent with an electrical port can work well with camping fans powered by AC adapters.

Since portability defines these gadgets, camping tent fans powered by batteries are however more common than those powered by an AC adapter. Most of them can last for a few hours, but you should bring replacement batteries or a charger if you plan on staying for an extended time.

Size

The size of the camping fan all depends on the nature of your camping trips. If you decide to use a family tent, choose a camping fan to cool the spacious floor plan. If however your camping tent is medium to small in size, then use a hanging camping fan that goes with the sturdiness of your tent. Or, if you are backpacking or hiking to your campsite, then a small, personal, portable camping fan is what you need.

Durability

As we all know, camping can be rough on all of your gear. Considering this, be sure to purchase a camping fan that can withstand the challenges that come with it as you explore the outdoors. The factors you should look out for here would include:

  • frame construction
  • battery housing
  • water resistance.

Noise

This feature depends on the fan’s blades. Products with plastic fan blades are generally (but not always) quieter than those with metal ones. The blades’ speed also affects the output noise. Here, you may want to consider fans with different speed options as you can adjust the blade pace to your preference, including noise level.

Airflow

The product’s diameter directly influences this factor hence fans that have excellent airflow generally have large diameters. However, the weight could be a trade off here since they are inherently larger and bulkier. However, some fans also come with an extra front protector included which turns the opposite way to the fan blades which increases air flow direction as well.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. LED bulbs – Some fans are equipped with light accessories to help you see at night.
  2. Extendable stands – These products can be used as desk fans or standing fans, depending on your outdoor situation.
  3. Remote control – Adjusting the fan’s blade speed is more convenient if you can do it at a distance. Remote-controlled products are the best choice here.
  4. Speed selectors – This accessory allows you to control both the airflow and noise of the product.
  5. Built-in power bank – There are portable fans where you can access their batteries to power up your small gadgets such as smartphones, iPods, torches, etc. These fans are not only excellent to keep you cool, but they can also function as emergency power banks as well.

What do I use?

For our camping needs, we use a Coleman brand rechargeable fan. If is 30cm in diameter and when recharged, the battery will last around 10 hours. It sits in a floor stand meaning we can place it anywhere we like in the tent and it has a second protector on the front which increases airflow.

We use it in a 9 man dome tent and it works a treat!

My three recommendations broken down

So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. Odoland Portable Fan

This first option is portable and mobile and weighs less than a kilo (1.16 pounds) making it perfect for camping of all types. This fan functions as a hanging or a stand fan ad keeps you cool with its powerful yet quiet air blades. Lastly, it is equipped with 18 low-powered LED lights to assist you during nighttime as you make your way around the camping ground. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Odoland
  • Weight: 1.16 pounds
  • Dimension: 6.37 x 6.37 x 11.4 inches
  • Power source: D cell batteries
  • Type: Standing or hanging

Other inclusions:

  • 18 bright LED bulbs
  • Fan and lamp switches
  • Up to 5 hours run time at high speed and 20 hours at low (from fully charged batteries)
  • Hanging hook
  • 360 degree rotation

Why have I chosen it?

I like this one due to its multi-functional features – it serves as a fan and a lighting fixture which is what we need during night hours. You can hang it or place it beside you and you have complete control of the output breeze via the fan switch with good airflow. It is a great option for a good price with reviews outlining that even though the product is relatively small, it cooled a 12 x 12 tent.

2. VEARMOAD Rechargeable Fan

This next option combines several functions into a single unit with everything you could want in a camping fan including a timer, remote control, long battery life, fast charging technology, and auto oscillation. Its long run time makes it a dependable choice for outdoor camping with an extendable tripod making it good for outdoor use as well. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Vearmoad
  • Weight: 4.95 pounds
  • Dimension: 15.86 x 13.11 x 5.24 inches
  • Power source: Rechargeable batteries
  • Type: Standing

Other inclusions it has:

  • Extendable tripod
  • 6 Speeds & Timer
  • Two 10000mAh replaceable batteries lasting 3-25 hours (dependent upon settings and starting charge)
  • Remote control
  • Built-in power bank

Why have I chosen this?

This fan comes with two rechargeable batteries, great air circulation and can easily convert it into a stand or floor fan. It is also great for the outdoors to keep you cool as you cook your barbecue using your portable grill or sitting around under your gazebo. Manipulating the fan from a distance is also possible with the remote-control meaning there is no need to stand in the middle of the night to change the air output or if you want to stay asleep as the night cools, the integrated timer will turn off the fan for you too.

3. Geek Aire 16-Inch Rechargeable Battery Operated Floor Fan

The last portable fan I recommend is revolutionary in many ways. Equipped with a 19200 mAh lithium-ion battery, it has an impressive running time of 3 – 24 hours with a fast-charging adapter that enables the fan to be fully charged within just 3 hours of uninterrupted charging. And for increased usability, the battery also contains a USB port which you can use to power up your smartphones and other small gadgets in case of emergency. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Geek Aire
  • Weight: 4.95 pounds
  • Dimension: 22.9 x 19.9 x 9.4 inches
  • Power source: Rechargeable batteries
  • Type: Floor fan

Other inclusions it has:

  • Battery gauge indicator
  • 16” metal blades
  • Backup power bank
  • Fast charging 26.5 V adapter
  • Built-in carry handle
  • Rubbed pads for vibration issues

Why have I chosen this?

I have chosen this last option for those who want the ultimate camping fan packed with all the features and benefits for the price. Although a floor fan, it has a 360-degree adjustable tilt to direct air where you need it to be – inside or outside your tent. Because it is cordless, you can also take it to whatever part of the camping ground you desire due to of its durable construction and IPX4 water-resistant quality.
