3 Best Lures for Skipjack Tuna

Hey there fellow fishing enthusiasts and welcome to my post where we will check out my three best lures for Skipjack Tuna to chase around this year.  As with any type of fishing, success depends on how prepared we are and this same principle applies to catching Skipjack Tuna, including having the correct lures.

Of course again as with many species, we have our favorites but we can also find that what works one day, will not the next.  So for those of you looking to get yourself a couple of good Skipjack Tuna lures, I have had a good look around and come up with three decent options below.

Let’s check them out…

My three recommended lures for Skipjack Tuna

I will review these in more detail below. Still, if you want to get moving without all the carry-on, my recommended products are listed here for your convenience:

What are lures for Skipjack Tuna?

As we probably know, fishing lures are small, artificial objects that are often shaped like a fish’s prey with a hookset attached. Their primary purpose is to draw target fish to a fishing line. When it comes to Skipjack Tuna, plastic skirts, shiny metal spoons or lead-head jigs with, plastic squid, bibless minnows, pilchards and other soft plastics are all good options.

Of course you may need to occasionally test different lures to see which ones attract more fish and fortunately for us, Skipjack will also often strike trolled plugs and lures intended for other fish when you are not actively trying to catch them as well.

What should you be looking for?

The following factors should be considered as you look around for a good lure for your Skipjack Tuna fishing.

  1. Lure type
  2. Durability
  3. Life-like action
  4. Additions

Lure type

Here is a short list of the fishing lures you may use to catch Skipjack Tuna.

  1. Spoon – This type of lure, also known as a Fishing spoon, is known for its straightforward design usually with an oblong shape, a concave side that catches water, and a flash of light that mimics a fleeing or injured bait fish. For larger species such as Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Muskies, Walleye, Salmon, Striped Bass and Skipjack,  spoons are well worth a try.
  2. Skirt lure – Skirted lures are typically trolled behind a boat which makes them good for Skipjack. One of the most adaptable lures on the market, skirt lures come in various sizes and head shapes and can be rigged in different ways.  Larger lures work best close to the boat, directly behind the teasers, and in the propeller wash when trolling. Smaller lures typically work best when set back from the boat.
  3. Popper lure – The popper is a reliable lure with a concave or hollowed nose used to disturb the water with splashes and noise in an  attempt to mimic any distressed animal moving or struggling on the water’s surface (baitfish, frogs, and insects are the most typical imitations). They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are typically made of wood or hard plastic. When retrieved along the surface, they all share a flat or blunt front with a noise-making and water-throwing purpose.
  4. Flying fish lure – This unique bait imitates the flying fish, one of the most sought-after tuna prey located all over the globe.  This is an excellent lure to use when trolling through areas where there are large numbers of tuna species because they usually go out of their way to chase down a sizable flying fish swimming close to the surface. The lure is designed to create a natural bubbling and swimming motion on the water’s surface that attracts tuna by producing sound and a realistic visual appeal.

Durability

Durability is the length of time that a product will continue to work. This rating considers the construction materials, the level of craftsmanship, and the maintenance requirements. Look for something that is strong and able to handle the rigors of both the saltwater and being attacked by fish.

Life-like action

Skipjacks have a higher chance of biting your lures if they resemble their natural prey. For this reason, choose a lure that will have the following qualities:

  1. Swimming action
  2. 3D eyes
  3. Strong scent

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  1. Integrated hooks: These are sharp and durable so that the skipjack cannot escape from your fishing line.
  2. Varying colors: Lures in different colors are helpful because they allow you to see them, although they are underneath the water. These colors also improve your chance of catching a fish because they are effective attractants.
  3. Number of pieces: Some brands offer more than one lure, which is extremely helpful since, in skipjack trolling, you’ll need several lures if one is not doing the job.

My three recommendations broken down

So based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. Sumo Spoon – Catfishing Bait Spoon for Skipjack, White Bass, Striped Bass and Other Baitfish

This lure belongs to the class of spoon baits that share their own effectiveness in enticing many large ocean roaming species. The construction of each lure resembles the Skipjack’s natural food as well.  See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Catfish Sumo
  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Type: Spoonbaits
  • Fishing style: Trolling and jigging
  • Weight: 1.06 ounces
  • Dimensions: 6.02 x 3.82 x 0.59 inches

Other inclusion:

  • It comes in four pieces

Why have I chosen it?

Its shape is a classic spoon: narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. It works best when retrieved slowly and steadily because of how it casts. Anglers can troll it, but they’ll need to use a weight or other tool to lower it in the water column. The manufacturers designed this lure’s unique weight and wobble to resemble the schools of baitfish your prey is pursuing.

2. Kmucutie Copper Head Trolling Lure

My second skipjack lure is a proven option thanks to their realistic construction and colorful skirts. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Kmucutie
  • Material: Copper and PVC
  • Type: Skirted lure
  • Fishing style: Trolling
  • Weight: 3.2 ounces
  • Dimensions: ‎8.27 x 0.79 x 0.79 inches

Other inclusions:

  • 5 pieces
  • Various colors
  • 5 jet holes for greater trolling attraction

Why have I chosen this?

One of the most significant benefits of using these lures is that they are available in various color combinations, allowing anglers to choose the ideal one for a particular season or set of circumstances.  Additionally, it has numerous jet holes on the metal head that act as bubble makers or “smoke” as it is trolled. This attracts tuna and encourages them to pursue the lure and strike. These lures are offered in a practical 5-pack with some of the most well-known colors for tuna trolling as well.

3. Lobo Lures Skipjack Hybrid UV Splash Trolling Lure

My final recommended skipjack lures are tournament-proven equipped with several features that aid in attracting Skipjacks in your favorite fishing place. See its specifications below:

  • Brand: Lobo Lures
  • Material: Resin
  • Type: Skirted lure
  • Fishing style: Trolling
  • Weight: 200 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎12 x 12 x 1.5 inches

Other inclusions :

  • Cable-rigged hooks
  • Different colors
  • Storage bag

Why have I chosen this?

These lures are built with fluorescent-colored skirts using Ultra-violet Light Refractive Technology (patent-pending).  Additionally, to create a splash effect, their heads are made to rock side to side to draw pelagic species out of the depths by showing a larger predator pursuing skipping baits.  These are a great option for all types of fast moving ocean predators such as most Tuna varieties, Mahi Mahi and even Marlin.
